Corsets were tremendously popular in Victorian times (during the 1800s), when they were often strengthened with pieces of whalebone. Corsets smidgen the waist, and if worn for a long time they can everlastingly change the shape of the waistline. The wasp-waist look went out of mode in the 1920s, but Cathie says that plenty of people still get pleasure from it today. "A lot of people think it's wonderful," she says. "But some people think it's ridiculous, perhaps they're jealous because they're overweight." Cathie says her tiny waist has not caused her any health problems.
